Urban Migration in Europe
Worldwide there is an increasing share of people that are moving. To a large extent, people from rural areas move to cities. Many immigrants have also found a new home in European cities. Those immigrants primarily chose urban districts that are characterized by migrant infrastructures and existing local migrant communities. This EU-wide funding measure therefore focuses on the analysis of urban migration and life of immigrants in districts in several European cities. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is involved in eight funding measures.
As part of the EU program "JPI Urban Europe" the BMBF supports the Urban Migration funding measure. Researchers, municipalities and practitioners work on solutions to improve the lives of immigrants and, in particular, with regard to urban quarters that are characterized by migration, to strengthen their integration capacity. The funding measure is conducting an transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach. The aim should be to synthesize and transfer the gathered scientific results and experiences and furthermore to learn from each other. The EU-wide program, in which cities work together on certain topics, is primarily intended to bring together the existing and to develop knowledge on migration topics across national borders. A further important goal is to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and the exchange of experiences in different contexts, cities and countries in order to improve the quality of life of immigrants in host communities and neighborhoods all over Europe.
Participating countries are Austria, Germany, Latvia, Sweden and United Kingdom.
