Energy Storage
The aim of the Energy Storage funding initiative is to accelerate the development of energy storage technologies in Germany and thus support the ambitious targets for future German energy supply as contained in the Energy Strategy announced by the German government in September 2010.
To ensure that by 2050 some 60 percent of Germany's gross energy use is met by renewable energy while maintaining the same standards of supply security, the Energy Storage funding initiative is designed to support the necessary technological breakthroughs and cost reductions, and contribute to rapid market introduction of new energy storage options. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) have jointly allocated some €200 million for the initiative launched in April 2011.
The Energy Storage initiative covers a broad thematic range, with the associated research taking in issues relating to thermal, chemical and electro-chemical energy storage, and also systems analysis approaches. Basic research, applied research projects and demonstration projects make a key contribution in enhancing the performance, efficiency and economic viability of the different storage technologies.
Information about the different storage models and research projects conducted under the Energy Storage initiative is available at www.forschung-energiespeicher.info.
