Organic Electronics, most notably Organic Light-Emitting Diodes and Organic Photovoltaics
Organic electronics is an upcoming technology that promises efficiency in the use of resources and energy. Researchers from research institutes and industry work together to develop innovative, cost-reducing processes in the emerging sector of organic electronics – most notably organic photovoltaics (OPV) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Research aims include improving the efficiency of organic photovoltaic cells and modules and extending the longevity of OLEDs.
Identification and development of innovative technology sectors plays a key role in strengthening Germany's competitiveness in the international market. A range of highly promising advances have already been seen in organic electronics.
For the technology to be successfully translated into industrial production, further research and development work is needed. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) launched the Organic Electronics, most notably Organic Light-Emitting Diodes and Organic Photovoltaics funding initiative in August 2011 as part of Germany's High-Tech Strategy.
The OPV research projects take up priority topics set out in the 6th Energy Research Programme. All other projects are conducted under the Photonics Research Germany funding programme. Promotion of research and development is designed to strengthen the link between science and industry, the aim being to achieve outstanding project results that allow the technologies involved to be produced by German industry.
