Sustainable Forestry
Sustainable forest management and the efficient use of wood in forest-based value chains play a key role for a sustainable economy based on renewable resources.
In the BMBF-funding priority entitled "Sustainable Forest Management" as part of the BMBF Framework Programme "Research for Sustainability", transdisciplinary research, innovative product and technology developments for sustainable forest management and for sustainable land management, for the improvement of the forestry-timber value added chain as well as for the provision of the future are supported. The measure shall enhance the national and international competitiveness of the forestry-timber sector and makes a contribution to the national sustainability strategy as well as to the Charter for Timber of the Federal Government.
Research fields of the funding measure:
- Forest today and in future: Scenarios and visions. Overall concepts, visions and trends in future forest and timber management? What decisions are required?
- Sustainable management, use and development of forests and densely wooded landscapes: Improvement of people's quality of life, provision of natural, social and economic resources and benefits of forests
- Development of value creation potentials along the forestry-timber chain. How can regional, supra-regional and global forestry-timber value added chains be optimized and further developed in a profit-oriented, ecological and socially fair manner?
Within the period from 2004-2010, the BMBF supported 26 collaborative projects with a total funding volume of approx. 30 million euros. The internationalisation of the funding measure was achieved by the participation in three transnational call announcements of the ERA-Nets WoodWisdom-Net (2006, 2009, 2010) on the one hand, and by networking with the DAAD-Special Programme: Research and Study for Sustainability on the other hand, and by the connection with the Scientific-Technical Cooperation between the PR of China and Germany.
The funding measure is concluded. Information on the funded projects and their results are available at the central Internet portal of the funding priority.
