Biodiversa+ funds joint projects on transnational biodiversity monitoring and ecosystem change

On 8 September 2022, the European Biodiversity Partnership - Biodiversa+ launched its second international call, seeking proposals for research projects aimed at improving transnational monitoring of biodiversity and ecosystem change.

The call focused on three key themes:

  1. Innovation and harmonisation of methods and tools for the collection and management of biodiversity monitoring data.
  2. Addressing knowledge gaps related to biodiversity status, dynamics, and trends in order to reverse biodiversity loss.
  3. Making effective use of available biodiversity monitoring data.

The call for proposals covers all habitats, i.e. terrestrial, limnic and marine ecosystems, in Europe and internationally.

Project proposals must be submitted in English via an electronic application portal (Electronic Proposal Submission System, EPSS). A two-stage application procedure will be used. The deadline for submitting pre-proposals is 9 November 2022 and full proposals must be submitted by 5 April 2023. Information on the submission, eligibility and evaluation criteria and other relevant information can be found on the Biodiversa+ website (https://www.biodiversa.org/2017 ).

The funding organisations of the European Biodiversity Partnership from 33 countries have joined forces for the announcement, which will fund the research projects together with the European Commission with over 40 million euros. On the German side, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) are participating. As part of the partnership, the European Commission will co-finance this call and increase the available research budget. The full list of participating funding organisations is available on the call webpages.

The European Biodiversity Partnership Biodiversa+
The European Biodiversity Partnership Biodiversa+, implemented jointly with the European Commission's Directorate-General for Environment and Directorate-General for Research and Innovation under Horizon Europe, is a pan-European network of organisations planning and funding research on biodiversity, ecosystem services and nature-based solutions. The partnership currently comprises 74 funding organisations from 36 countries. Biodiversa+ coordinates research programmes between the EU, its Member States and associated countries and links environment and research ministries as well as funding organisations and environmental protection agencies as key partners for the implementation of biodiversity research and innovation.

The Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) of the Biodiversity Partnership provides for a total of six co-financed calls for research projects, biodiversity monitoring and advisory activities at the interface between science and policy for the period 2022-2028 (approx. 40 million euros each).
