Hydrogen research for the future energy mix

Germany and France are funding joint hydrogen projects. Both countries are preparing to establish a hydrogen economy. A joint call for reseach initiatives will finance innovative hydrogen solutions.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR) are funding innovative projects that provide solutions to key challenges in the development of a hydrogen economy - an added value for both countries.

With a duration of three years and a budget of 1.5 – 2.5 million euros per project, at least one German and one French research institution are working together. Researchers are advancing innovations for electrochemical hydrogen production, hydrogen infrastructure and hydrogen system integration. Funding is provided for joint projects with German and French partners who carry out on industry related basic research .

The projects are expected to produce innovative research contributions to a future cross-sector hydrogen economy in France, Germany and Europe. A close collabaoration along the entire value chain enables a succesful transfer into the application.

Background

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR) initiated a joint call aiming to develop a hydrogen economy. In their respective national hydrogen strategies, both countries decided to accelerate the development and use of hydrogen technologies. Therefore they launched corresponding funding programmes for hydrogen research.

IDEAS wants to advance the technology of anion exchange membrane electrolysis (AEMEL). The aim is creating high-performance, cost-effective and durable system components. To this end, the project is developing new aerogel catalysts, optimising membrane electrode units, standardising test protocols and developing countermeasures to reduce degradation. AI models support this work.

The CrossHy research project aims at creating a robust and detailed roadmap developing a necessary hydrogen infrastructure in France and Germany. For this purpose, models for multi-energy systems (electricity, natural gas, hydrogen, heat) are being developed, coupled and applied. CrossHy focuses on synergies via coordinated operation of energy systems in both countries.

MINDSET aims at developing innovative open source models. These are intended to harmonise an introduction of hydrogen in the EU with developments on international markets. MINDSET creates a set of tools by combining theoretical analysis and numerical modeling. This allows flexible use, even if regulations and market conditions change.

The overall aim of FFWD is a more efficient and environmentally friendly water electrolysis with proton exchange membranes (PEM). To achieve this, PFAS-free hydrocarbon polymers are being developed. They are more gas tight and more suitable for higher temperatures. The project covers development from polymer to (coated) membranes to 250 cm² cell stacks to cover the value chain from basic research to industry.

The HADES project aims at enabling electrocatalytic decomposition of ammonia and purification of resulting hydrogen in a single step. Using ceramic-based membrane reactors and advanced catalysts, the project is developing an efficient, compact and modular technology to provide green hydrogen.
